Poirier Gives Makhachev a Run for His Money

In a highly anticipated lightweight bout, Islam Makhachev (26-1) defeated Dustin Poirier (30-9, 1 no-contest) via submission (rear-naked choke) at 3:03 of the third round at UFC 302, which took place on June 1 at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.

Poirier started the fight strong, landing several hard shots and taking Makhachev down. However, Makhachev was able to reverse the position and take Poirier's back. From there, Makhachev controlled the round, working for a submission but unable to secure it.

In the second round, Poirier came out aggressively, but Makhachev was able to weather the storm and take Poirier down again. This time, Makhachev was able to lock in a rear-naked choke, causing Poirier to tap out.

The victory extends Makhachev's win streak to 11 and solidifies his status as one of the top contenders in the lightweight division. Poirier, meanwhile, will look to bounce back from this setback in his next fight.
